Iga Swiatek's Australian Open preparation has hit a snag, and it's a situation she's never faced before. Is this a sign of trouble ahead, or just a bump in the road for the world number one?
Iga Swiatek, a dominant force in women's tennis, recently experienced her second defeat at the United Cup, falling to Belinda Bencic in the final held in Sydney. This loss followed a previous defeat against Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. (Interestingly, Coco Gauff now boasts two records against Iga Swiatek that no other WTA player has managed, a testament to Gauff's rising star.) Despite Swiatek's individual setbacks, Team Poland persevered and remarkably reached the United Cup final.
In the championship match, Swiatek again faced defeat, this time against the skilled Belinda Bencic representing Switzerland. However, the Polish team showcased incredible resilience. Hubert Hurkacz secured a crucial victory, and the Polish pair triumphed in the mixed doubles, ultimately clinching the United Cup title for Poland.
But here's where it gets controversial... Swiatek's performance at the United Cup has placed her in uncharted territory as she heads to the Australian Open.
Up until this season, Swiatek had never suffered more than a single loss in the lead-up to the Australian Open. In her impressive eight seasons on the WTA Tour, she's only lost one match before the Australian Open on five separate occasions. Furthermore, in both 2021 and 2023, she entered the first Grand Slam of the year undefeated.
These back-to-back losses to Gauff and Bencic at the United Cup mark a new, and arguably unwelcome, milestone in Swiatek's career. This raises a crucial question: Can a champion rebound from early-season setbacks, or do these losses foreshadow a deeper struggle at the Australian Open?
And this is the part most people miss... While Swiatek's pre-Australian Open form might seem concerning, it's important to remember she's never actually won the Australian Open title. So, arguably, her form leading into the competition hasn't been a decisive factor in the past. The Australian Open remains the only Grand Slam that has eluded her grasp, with her best results being semi-final appearances in 2022, where she was defeated by Danielle Collins, and in 2023, where Madison Keys ended her run. Does this suggest the Australian Open surface or atmosphere simply doesn't suit her game as well as the other Slams?
Iga Swiatek, despite her personal loss in the final against Switzerland, was quick to celebrate Poland's historic United Cup victory. She has consistently represented Poland in the United Cup, including a heartbreaking final defeat to the United States in 2023. This year, even with her individual struggles, Poland rallied to overcome Switzerland and finally hoist the trophy.
Swiatek expressed her joy and pride on Instagram, writing to her Polish teammates: "WHATTT? Kasia, Janek, Hubi and the rest of our amazing team…thank you. I’m so proud."
Now, Swiatek will focus solely on preparing for the Australian Open, which commences on January 19th. She will not participate in any further tournaments beforehand.
