Jonas Vingegaard's Grand Tour Refresh: Avoiding Burnout and Chasing History (2026)

Jonas Vingegaard's bold move to tackle the Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double in 2026 is a fascinating strategy, one that aims to prevent the all-too-common burnout in cycling.

Vingegaard, the Danish cycling sensation, has had an incredible run at the Tour de France, winning twice and consistently finishing at the top. But here's where it gets controversial: he's decided to shake things up, opting for a new approach despite Visma's tried-and-tested formula for success.

"I really needed the change," Vingegaard confesses. And this is the part most people miss - it's not just about the physical training, but also the mental refresh that comes with a new challenge.

Visma's approach, which included altitude camps and the Critérium du Dauphiné, had worked wonders for Vingegaard in the past. But with the threat of burnout looming, especially after witnessing Simon Yates' retirement due to a loss of motivation, Vingegaard and his team decided to take a different path.

"It's about listening to yourself and understanding your needs," Vingegaard explains. "I've been close to burning out myself, and I don't want to reach that point. So, we decided to do something different."

And different it is! Vingegaard's new calendar includes racing the Giro d'Italia, a move he believes will benefit his performance at the Tour de France, where he aims to dethrone his main rival, Tadej Pogačar.

But why the change? Vingegaard is clear: "It's not about being the first of this generation. It's about winning all three. I'm at my peak now, and I want to make the most of it."

With this bold strategy, Vingegaard aims to join an elite club, one that includes his childhood idol, Alberto Contador.

What do you think? Is Vingegaard's move a brilliant strategy or a risky gamble? Let us know in the comments!
