London to Glasgow Train Extended! Lumo's New Route & Sustainable Travel Options (2026)

Rail link from London to Edinburgh now extends to Glasgow

A daily rail service from London has been extended to reach the west coast of Scotland, expanding its route to include Glasgow. Lumo’s London King's Cross service will now originate and terminate at Glasgow Queen Street, with stops at Falkirk High and Edinburgh along the East Coast Main Line.

The low-cost carrier, part of FirstGroup, previously operated trains between Edinburgh and London. Under the new plan, two northbound departures will run on weekdays, with one southbound service, and one train in each direction will operate on weekends.

In addition, the operator is set to introduce a new daily service linking Stirling and London next year.

Stuart Jones, managing director of First Rail Open Access, described the development as a landmark milestone. He commented that it provides a sustainable travel option while also supporting economic growth and expressed pride in promoting Scotland and delivering the distinctive Lumo service to more customers starting this week.

The current service itinerary departs from Glasgow Queen Street and stops at Falkirk High, Edinburgh Haymarket, Edinburgh Waverley, Morpeth, Newcastle, and Stevenage before arriving at London King’s Cross.

Scotland nationalised most of its rail network in April 2022, whereas most rail services in England are slated for public ownership by 2027. Lumo operates on an open-access model, setting its own fares and receiving no taxpayer subsidies.

Paul Tetlaw of Transform Scotland, a sustainable transport group, expressed hope that the expanded services will persuade some travelers to choose rail over flying to London. He noted a sizable segment of people who currently drive or fly to the northeast of England and London now have a viable train alternative. The forthcoming Stirling services are expected to build on this shift toward rail travel and could help move people toward Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

What do you think about extending rail services to Glasgow and beyond? Should such open-access, subsidy-free models become more common, or should routes be publicly funded to ensure broader coverage? Share your views in the comments.
